Rāpare: Another Day of Open Hearts

Thursday. It was another beautiful day at Arataki Community School. Teachers opened doors and shared their students learning journey with us in beautiful ways. In so many ways we have been blessed through this whole week and we are struggling with Friday being our last day at Arataki School. You go into something with an open mind and an open heart and you find yourself not wanting the journey to end. In many ways, I suppose that is what school years are all about. This is the end of the first month of the school year over here and just 2.5 months ago, these students were closing out a year at Arataki. Perspective- it is all about perspective.

Today Mary and Sandra taught a young boy to speak OjiCree in 10 minutes- right from learning the syllabics chart to understanding the sounds. 10 MINUTES! Language is a beautiful thing.

Today students shared their Pepeha with me- their tribal stories- and asked me about mine. Thirst for knowledge is a beautiful thing.

Today students saw the fruits of their labour when they got to eat a watermelon grown in their school garden that THEY planted and cared for. Growth is a beautiful thing.

Today I watched a student introduce his sister to other students with such awe that it reminded me of my own brother. Love is a beautiful thing.

Today the people of Arataki Community School represented, for all to see, the school goal: Whakatipuhia nga manawa me nga hinengaro- Growing Hearts & Minds.

*posting this on Friday morning because my computer was not charged last night. Happy Thursday to those at home*
